This condition is known as menorrhagia. Menorrhagia is defined as menstruation at regular cycle intervals but with excessive flow and/or duration and is one of the most common gynaecologic complaints. If you are changing pads or tampons every 1-3 hrs or your bleeding lasts 7 or more days per cycle, then this needs to be investigated.
Menorrhagia
Menorrhagia or heavy periods can affect women in so many ways. Women become embarrassed about talking about this condition or believe that this type of bleeding is normal. You can be affected socially, physically and emotionally, it is time to do something about it.
Menorrhagia is a very treatable condition with a variety of choices, for this blog I will focus on treatment with a day surgery procedure called NovaSure Ablation. This is very suitable for women who have completed their family i.e.have no further plans for pregnancy
If you are experiencing these types of symptoms, ask for a referral from your GP to a specialist gynaecologist for a full assessment and diagnosis to determine the cause of your bleeding. Dr. Andrew Cary will take a complete medical history and perform an ultrasound in his Gold Coast rooms to find the cause for your menorrhagia. Once he has determined a cause he will discuss with you your options for treatment.
NovaSure
If NovaSure is the treatment of choice, Dr. Cary will give you a detailed description about the surgery and a more detailed education from our nurse practitioner about what to expect before and after this procedure.
The Novasure procedure treats the entire lining of the uterus at once. The procedure does not require any incisions, a slender device is inserted through the cervix under anaesthetic and the endometrial (uterine) lining is ablated. It is quick, minimally invasive and a simple procedure done as a day procedure.
It has been proven to greatly reduce or completely stop heavy periods in most cases. Because it is performed as a day case, people can generally return to normal activities the next day. It is important to remember that this treatment is intended for women who do not wish to have any more children.
Dr. Cary has been performing this procedure for two decades and highly recommends it as a treatment option for heavy periods.
For those women suffering from troublesome periods but are not finished their family, other choices are suitable and available so please consider caring for your own wellbeing and make an appointment soon.
